Direct axis synchronous reactance refers to the reactance offered to the armature flux when the peak of the armature mmf (magnetomotive force) coincides with the field pole axis (also known as direct axis). Unsaturated reactance values can be determined by application of short-circuit tests to synchronous generators, excited to reduced terminal voltages of up to 20%
